I don’t care how, I want it now

Over 4th of July weekend, I spent some time on the lake. Do you ever notice that no matter what lake it is, everyone calls it the lake. Well at least in Oklahoma. Up here in The Great White North they call it “camp”. On the Friday you ask people what their plans are for the weekend and their response goes a something like this. “Yu-hum,  headed upta camp tomorrow.” So I joined in and went “upta” camp and I loved it.  But what I love the most was it was the first time I ever used a kayak.

Now I’m hooked. I love it. I love kayaking. The boats are so nice a light that I can carry it myself. They are low to the water so in shallow water you can do some underwater exploring. And they don’t tip as easily as canoes. As soon as I came in off the lake I demanded to the old hubsters that I need my own kayak, NOW! So now the question is where can I get a used kayak on the cheap? Any suggestions?

David’s parents own kayaks and use them a lot up in Minnesoooooota! Dotcha know, with all those ponds (well, they call them lakes), land-o-10,000 lakes, eh?! I just wish there were lakes in KC to use them!

  2. My hubby and I have been in search of a cheap kayak for a while, but just haven’t wanted to shell out the money. I’m just going to go to Maryland and take the one at my parant’s house instead.

We’ve searched all over and I can tell you some prices you should expect.

To be honest Craig’s List is a good spot to find listings or Uncle Henry’s. If you are going used don’t buy larger than a a 9ft kayak (you don’t need one bigger than that if you’re just going to use it to poke around a lake or slow river) and don’t pay over $200. You can get a brand new kayak (like a perception or Old Town) for around $250 or $300. Try and get a new paddle, because used ones may have cracks or bends in it you don’t want. Don’t get a wooden paddle, whatever you do.

You should be able to get a new kayak, life jacket, and paddle for $400 or less if you shop around. Avoid LLBean and EMS for kayaks. They are over priced.

Good luck and I hope you find one!!

Thanks for the info. That’ really helpful. I really just want to find one at a garage sale or if someone I know wants an upgrade and sells me theirs really cheap. So I’m keeping my eyes peeled.

Oh yeah, Minesooota. I do know. Land-o-10,000 Lakes. And they have a nice airport and pretty fancy mall too.

I’ve been on the lookout for a cheap kayak for a while now too. I spent so much money on renting them when I was very injured.

  9. I tried that once, long ago, and LOVED it. It was the first athletic endeavor I’d ever done that I could actually DO. I hope you find one.

That’s what I love about it too. It was so easy I could do it. I could paddle easily and the boat was nice a light. Geniuses whoever thought up kayaking.
